Running Bad For Your Bones And Joints
Many people believe that running may actually bring about premature harm to the bones and cause osteoporosis. However, osteoporosis, arthritis and other bone and joint problems are all due to aging, obesity, injury or family history of arthritis and chronic joint inflammation or rheumatoid arthritis.
Many studies have led to the conclusion that running indeed is the ideal strategy for promoting bone density. In fact, researchers believe that running does more good for a person and there is no difference in the occurrence of osteoporosis in runners and non-runners.
Of course, running does also cause injuries but these are all due to inadequate precautions while doing the runs. It is just the way that you go about doing the activity that causes bones and joint problems.
Stay injury free while running
As far as running is concerned, you just need to be very careful in planning out your exercise. Before you go for a run, make sure that you do warm ups to build up your body and always cool down with stretching movements after your run. Another factor that causes injury is the choice in poor footwear.
Therefore, use the right running shoes not only for comfort but also for a good grip and fit. Always start off your regime steadily without exerting yourself. Once you have gained a good pace then you can gradually increase it to a comfortable level. Always stay off rocky or uneven surface areas when you are choosing your route.
Always keep a space in between your running days for recovery and do not ignore any slight pain or discomfort while running. You need to stop and assess if you feel pain in your joints while running.
If you feel much fatigue due to over training, then take ample time to recover completely before starting again. Never try to go beyond your fitness level and always listen to your body.
Humans are built to run
Our bodies have been designed for moving and running about. In terms of biology, our bodies since beginning of time have depended on speed and ability for survival. Whether running away from danger or hunting for meals, humans have always depended on their ability and agility of movements.
Evolution process has better equipped humans to embrace their need for speed with the right tools. Therefore, running cannot be the cause of all our bone ailments. On the contrary, regular running exercise can build up muscle tone and make the joints healthier. This due to the fact muscles protects our bones by reducing some of the pressure exerted upon them.
It is clear that running causes stress to the ankles, joints and knees as they bear the weight. However, they get over this stress when you exercise regularly and steadily build up their strength.
Even so, running without proper strategy can cause severe damage to the cartilage or may weaken a muscle that protects a joint. Therefore, you need to exercise gradually and stop if you feel any pain during exercise.
If you feel discomfort even after correcting your running strategy then you need to switch to other forms of exercise like swimming or biking.
Running in itself can be more beneficial for your bones and joints as opposed to the belief that it causes so many ailments. You just need to be well prepared and careful while carrying out running exercise. If you stick to the rules, there is no reason why you should have any problems.
